Chelsea freshman volleyball player Kayla Lee-Lynn Munson is a special kind of player. She plays Volleyball (school and travel). Her positions are Outside Hitter and Left Back. She has had big accomplishments in the past: “Each year I set goals for myself,” Munson said. “Last year, my goal was to make it on one of the top travel teams. I accomplished this goal by making the ones team on Team Detroit. This year my main focus was to make varsity, which was one of my great volleyball accomplishments.“ Algebra is her favorite subject. “My favorite high school teacher so far is Mr. Pedlow,” she said. “His style of teaching makes class interesting and it seems like there is never a dull moment when he teaches. In middle school, Mr. Coon was the teacher that I admired most. His class was the most interesting during middle school.” She enjoys her coach. “My favorite coach is my current varsity Coach Erin Dillon and her assistant Coach Val Johnson,” she said. “They are supportive, encouraging, and help me with my technique. I get frustrated with myself at times when I mess up and they help me get past that frustration barrier.” Her favorite class currently is English and she has many hobbies. “I love to travel,” she said. “Being on a volleyball travel team, we get to experience new places every year. Traveling is a way to experience unfamiliar areas. Last year we traveled to Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, and Orlando.” Her parents are Chris and Kori Munson, and siblings are Corbyn Munson and Cole Munson. She has plenty of time to decide on her career. “I’m still a freshman so plans will most definitely change in the future but I’d like to get a scholarship to play college volleyball at a Division 1 school and possibly go into zoology or nursing,” she said. “Volleyball is a game of mistakes, but the only mistake you can truly make is losing confidence or giving up on yourself especially in the toughest parts of play,” she said. Try to focus on the good rather than the bad.” Erin Dillon, Chelsea High School Varsity Volleyball Coach had this to add about Kayla: “Kayla is a great asset to the team this year. Kayla has worked extremely hard the past few months on improving her technique and her hard work is paying off. She is a natural competitor and we are lucky to have her a part of our program. I am excited to watch her develop over the course of the next 3 years!”
