So how on earth did this whole thing get started? Well sit back and I’ll tell you the story. Nancy Blanton and good friend Sue Rodgers are huge fans of Thompson’s Pizzeria. They both go there regularly because of the excellent food, hometown family environment, and adore the family who owns it. One day after finding themselves at the Pizzeria several days in a row around Christmas time, the ladies humorously suggested they try frequenting Thompson’s Pizzeria seven days in a row. Together a light bulb of an idea went off. Instead of going to the pizzeria seven days in a row the two vowed to do 12 days in a row to represent the 12 Days of Christmas. And instead of calling their idea the 12 Days of Christmas, they decided to call it the 12 Days of Thompson’s. That’s how the 12 Days of Thompson’s got started, but over the years its become a vow between two friends to annually honor a passed, yet nevertheless cherished friend, whom many Chelsea community members loved and admired. That friend was Lynda Collins, previous owner of Thompson’s Pizzeria. The very same year Nancy and Sue started the 12 Days of Thompson’s, and a hand full of days before Christmas, Lynda passed away after a lengthy bout with illness. In her article, Thompson’s Pizzeria owner Lynda Collins remembered for her generosity, mLive writer Jessica Webster’s words really captured the essence of the former pizzeria owner. “The City of Chelsea lost much more than a pillar of the community when Lynda Collins passed away at the age of 68. Community members also lost a family member; someone who was always there for anything that needed doing or anyone who needed taking care of. In addition to running a successful restaurant and raising nine children, Lynda founded the Chelsea Historical Society, and was a founding member and president of the Chelsea Depot Association. She was also a Girl Scout leader and softball coach. And Lynda Collins gave- food, money and time- to just about any organization that asked.” To keep Lynda’s spirit alive Nancy and Sue did not break their 12 Days of Thompson’s commitment during her passing, and 5 years later they still haven’t.
