By Dave Merchant [email protected] By this time next year there will be a girls’ high school hockey team outside of Ann Arbor. The team will consist of high school girls from Chelsea, Saline, Manchester, Dexter, Lincoln and Ypsilanti Community schools. The coach will be Adam Winters. The team will be Washtenaw United and the league will be the Michigan Metro Girls’ Hockey League. Winters played club hockey on the East Coast at West Chester University. He coached the University of Michigan Women’s Club Team from 2004-2011. Since 2014 he has been involved with the Ann Arbor Hockey Association. Currently Ann Arbor Pioneer has a team and Huron and Skyline have combined teams. “The girls have to fund themselves,” Winters said. “We want them to be recognized by their schools as a varsity sport.” The goal would be for each school to eventually have their own team starting with the biggest schools like Saline. There will be an informational meeting on Jan. 12 at 6 pm at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. For more information call 734-277-1569.
