37 years ago, Sandy Hansen penned the illustrations for Color Me Dexter, My Hometown Coloring Book. Published by The  Dexter Lion’s Club. Dexter has undergone tremendous changes since Sandy first created the art for the coloring books. After a Dexter student participated in a Peace Poster art contest sponsored by the Lion’s club, which won her district and took second place in the state, Claire Vander Haagen seemed like the perfect artist to create five new drawings; Gordon Hall, The Dexter Bakery, Lions Park Playground, the Clock Tower, and the Gazebo in Monument Park.
Claire is a freshman at Dexter High School. While she’s a particularly talented artist, she also enjoys playing the violin and trombone as well as water polo and lacrosse. Claire is a Renaissance woman and is very accomplished for her young age. I felt a little silly asking a freshman in high school if she wants to make art a career.  Many college freshmen change their minds. But, with a passion for art and a love of math, Claire offered a much wiser answer than I expected. Claire stated that she’d love to be an architect or a structural engineer, both career possibilities would utilize her talent and her love of math. Recalling my first bi-line, I wanted to know how Claire felt when she saw her work in the book. “It felt so cool. It felt so cool knowing kids would get to color my art,” she said.  I bet it was thrilling.  To see more of Claire’s artwork, check out her Instagram page: Cvh paints and if you’re interested in purchasing her work or commissioning a piece, you can contact her mother, Christy at 734-323-1706.
The Color Me Dexter, My Hometown Coloring Book can be purchased at the Dexter Bakery and The Dexter Creamery for $5.
